Advanced Placement Program Excels

Students in our Advanced Placement Program continue to do New Hartford proud. In 2004, they participated at four times the state and six times the national average, earning us a ranking in the top 1 percent of all schools in the nation (130 out of 22,000). Newsweek magazine has recognized our district three times for the excellence of our AP program.

Of particular note is our AP European History course. We placed first in the world last year for schools of our size, based on the number of students who scored three or high on the exam relative to our total high school enrollment. According to Trevor Packer, executive director of the College Board Advanced Placement Program, New Hartford Senior High School had "the highest performing AP European History course among all schools worldwide in its size range" (500-999 high school students). "These results are a great tribute to our AP European History program and are indicative of the high quality of our entire AP program," says Vincent Condro, high school principal. "Teachers in the grades preceding the AP course also deserve recognition. Students come into our AP program well prepared to succeed." In addition, the number of our students designated as AP Scholars reached 85 last year, the highest number in New Hartford history. This is a major accomplishment, requiring the completion of three or more AP exams with a grade of three or higher.
