At its Nov. 14 meeting, the New Hartford Board of Education appointed Sean Dwyer as the Director of Special Education.
A special education teacher at the Senior High School, Mr. Dwyer has nearly 15 years of experience as an educator. Prior to joining New Hartford in 2021, he worked as a special education teacher for the Sauquoit Valley Central School District.
Mr. Dwyer will continue to teach through the end of the semester and will begin in his new role in January 2024.
“I am excited to take this next step in my career to continue working with students, teachers, parents and administrators to enhance the learning experience and services at New Hartford,” said Mr. Dwyer.
A graduate of Nazareth College, Mr. Dwyer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in social studies education for 7-12 adolescence from the University at Buffalo. He holds New York State certifications for teaching students with disabilities at the adolescent level 7-12, as well as adolescence education 7-12 specializing in social studies. He is currently in the process of earning his Certificate of Advanced Study in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership from the State University of New York at Cortland.
“Mr. Dwyer’s experience in special education and his knowledge of the district will be instrumental in helping the district meet the unique needs of students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cosimo Tangorra Jr. “I would also like to thank Kathy Fonda for serving as interim throughout the beginning of the school year and ensuring a seamless transition.”
