First Quarter Benchmark Assessment

  • To be prepared for the first quarter benchmark assesment students should be able to:

    • Scientific Method
      • Describe the importance of sample size, replicates, and control groups for a valid experiment
      • Identify the hypothesis, dependent variable and independent variable from an experiment
      • Interpret data in graphs
      • Correctly use a compound microscope
      • Measure objects in the field of view and convert from mm to μm
      • Identify important safety percautions in experiments
      • Design a quality controlled experiment if given a research question
      • Graph a set of data using double-line graphs
      • Describe how human body systems respond to exercise
    • Evolution
      • Identify and describe variation, struggle for survival, reproduction and adaptation as factors in natural selection
      • Explain how bacteria or insects might develop resistance to chemicals
      • Interpret fossil evidence to describe the evolution of species
      • Define speciation
      • Intepret evolutionary tree diagrams
      • Read a description of an organism and describe how its characteristics resulted from natural selection
    • Biochemistry
      • Define enzymes and describe how they work
      • Describe how enzymes are ffected by environmental factors
      • Intepret graphs of enzyme action
      • Describe important properties of carbohydrates
      • Identify examples of polysaccharides
      • Identify hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis
      • Connect DNA base sequence to amino acid sequesnce and protein synthesis
      • Identify the monomers of polysaccharides and poly peptides
