• Independent Reading Requirement
The ultimate goal is to encourage a love of reading! Research shows that reading is one of the most important skills one can possess. While I realize that everyone doesn't love reading, practice makes reading easier and more enjoyable. Therefore, the expectation is for students to read NIGHTLY. How much? A minimum of 20 minutes a day is desirable.  Every one reads at a different pace, and that's okay.
With that in mind,  please bring your independent reading book to class EVERY day. Whenever you finish a task, you can get lost in your own reading material. That is my idea of heaven! Forms for the independent reading book will be completed in class. Forms for nonfiction articles will be completed in class and/or at home.
Note: 8th graders should aim to read one or two novels (the equivalent of around 400 pages) and five articles, while 7th graders should read one novel and three articles.  Extra credit will be given for an additional novel and/or two articles. Please see me for more details.
