New Hartford's Co-Ed Indoor Track team involves both male and female students (grades 9-12) competing in a series of interscholastic track and field invitationals during the Winter season. Though the team practices as one unit (boys and girls together), the meets are run separately into boys and girls divisions.
The team is generally broken up into four (4) main groups: distance runners (800m and up), sprinters (600m and down), jumpers (long, triple and high) and throwers (shot put and weight throw). Typically, workouts are assigned by group to best prepare athletes for competition. Further information on the events and what is required for them can be found on the Meet Information and Lineups page of this website.
Practices are held Monday-Friday after school at the high school from 3:00pm-4:35pm. We practice outside as long as the weather permits. This means that athletes are required to always have the appropriate clothing for both indoor and/or outdoor practice. All meets occur on weekdays (typically Tuesdays and/or Fridays) at a variety of locations throughout our area (see Host Facilities and Directions page).
Any interested student willing to commit to the team is invited to participate. However, it should be noted that space is limited for competition in meets. Every meet/invitational the team attends upholds strict limits on the number of entries per school and the number of events each athlete may compete in. Every effort is made to give all members of the team an opportunity to compete in meets.
Criteria for Team Members
The Six Ultimate Rules
1. Be a professional
2. Act like a champion
3. Respond to adversity; don't react
4. Be on time
(Being late means either that this team is not important to you or that you can't be relied upon)
(Do what you're supposed to when you're supposed to do it. Not almost. All the way. Not most of the time. All of the time.)
6. Take Ownership
(You can't always control circumstances. However, you can control your attitude, approach and response. Your options are to complain or to look ahead and figure out how to make the situation better.)
NO EXCUSES. NO EXPLANATIONS.
Team Rules and Policies
1. It is important to remember that you are a student first, athlete second. This is an elective activity. Therefore, always make sure you stay on top of your academic requirements. Disregard for your academic responsibilities will not be tolerated.
2. Participation in Varsity Indoor Track requires your attendance for success. This team should be your #1 priority when it comes to extracurricular activity. There will be no special consideration for other extracurricular activities (Masque, clubs, work, etc.).
3. It is expected and required that you always maintain a high degree of professionalism and courtesy towards your coaches, teammates and opponents. Poor sportsmanship will NOT be tolerated.
Athletes will not be penalized for attending review sessions, make up exams or study time with a teacher. However, if they arrive late to practice they must have a pass signed by the teacher they were working with.
By becoming a part of this team, athletes are not only representing New Hartford outside of the community but Indoor Track within the school. Thus, it is expected that they will maintain adequate academic standing during the season.
If it is discovered that a team member did not complete their assigned schoolwork, they will be penalized by becoming ineligible to participate in certain team activities until said work has been submitted to the teacher.
All practices will begin promptly at 3:00pm. Any team member not dressed and ready for practice at 3:00 (without an excuse) will be penalized. If being tardy to practice becomes chronic, that athlete will be excused from the team.
As per NHCSD policy, any student arriving after 11:30am is ineligible to participate in the day's practice and/or meet. For this team, any student assigned detention (of any duration) cannot practice and/or participate in the next meet.
All team members are expected and required to participate in all practices and team activities. If an athlete skips a practice without an excuse, they will not be allowed to compete in the next meet. If an athlete skips two practices without an excuse, they will be suspended from the team. Similarly, any athlete that does not complete their assigned workout in practice will be ineligible to compete in the next meet.
If any athlete is unable to attend practice or a meet, they must notify the coaches prior to said practice or meet begins.
