These are some of my favorite novels. Choosing which books should go with which grade level is almost impossible because everyone reads at different levels and has different interests. My suggestion to students who want to choose a selection from this list is to ask Mom or Dad for help in picking out an appropriate book for you. I hope you enjoy them, I sure did! |

Anne returns to her village to teach. Because of Winn-Dixie, DiCamillo, Kate- Ten-year-old India Opal Buloni describes her first summer in the town of Naomi, Florida, and all the good things that happen to her because of her big ugly dog Winn-Dixie. Anne of Windy Poplars, L.M. Montgomery-Anne's continuing saga. Ben and Me, Robert Lawson - Amos, the mouse, is Benjamin Franklin's companion, and he recounts how he was responsible for Franklin 's inventions and discoveries. Bud, Not Buddy, Christopher Curtis - Bud, a motherless boy, travels from Flint, Michigan in search of H.E. Calloway, the man he believes is his father. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl - Charlie wins one of the 5 golden tickets to gain entry to Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory. Charlotte's Web, E.B. White- Charlotte the spider works to save her friend, Wilbur the pig's, life. Crispin: The Cross of Lead, Avi- Falsely accused of theft and murder, an orphaned peasant boy in fourteenth-century England flees his village and meets a larger-than-life juggler who holds a dangerous secret. The Dear America series. Double Fudge, Judy Blume -The continued tales of Fudge/Peter. Twelve - year- old Peter is constantly embarrassed by his brother, Fudge, and his long lost but just discovered cousins, Flora and Fauna. Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine- Based on the story of Cinderella, Ella struggles against the curse that forces her to obey any order given to her. Fairest, Gail Carson Levine - Set in the same magical country as Ella Enchanted, this book is based on the story of Snow White. From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, E.L. Konigsburg- Two children run away from their Connecticut home and go to New York 's Metropolitan Museum of Art where they manage to live in the museum in relative luxury and solve a mystery. Fudge-a-Mania, Judy Blume- A Fudge/Peter adventure told by Peter. He describes the family vacation in Maine with the Tubmans, and highlights the escapades of his younger brother, Fudge. The Hardy Boys stories, Franklin Dixon - Various books about the adventures of Frank and Joey Hardy. The brothers manage to solve the mysteries that they encounter. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, J.K. Rowling -The first book in the series. Harry enters Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, J.K. Rowling - Second in the series. Harry is in danger when the Chamber of Secrets is opened again @ Hogwarts. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, J.K. Rowling - Third in the series. Harry confronts the evil wizard responsible for the death of his parents. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling - Fourth in the series. Harry enters a wizarding tournament. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , J.K. Rowling - Fifth in the series. Voldemort is back and the Order of the Phoenix begins to build the opposition against him. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling - Sixth in the series. Harry comes into possesion of a text book previously owned by the mysterious "Half Blood Prince". Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, J.K. Rowling - Seventh in the series. Harry must face Voldemort one final time! Hatchet, Gary Paulsen - A 13 year old learns how to survive in the wilderness after a plane crash with the use of a hatchet and also learns to survive his parent's divorce. Henry Huggins stories, Beverly Cleary - The humorous adventures of Henry and Ribsy, the dog he adopts. Holes, Lois Sachar - Another proof of his family's bad fortune, Stanley Yelnats is sent to a corrective camp where he makes his first real friend, finds a treasure, and discovers a new sense of self. Iggie's House, Judy Blume - Eleven-year-old Winnie learns about the difference between being a good neighbor and being a good friend when African American neighbors move into their white neighborhood. Little Women, Louisa May Alcott - The adventures of the four March sisters in 19th Century New England as they grow up and marry. The Magic Tree House series Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli - Maniac Magee becomes a legend as he accomplishes awe inspiring feats. Matilda, Roald Dahl - In an attempt to restore Miss Honey, the nice schoolteacher to financial security, Matilda uses her unique abilities to get rid of the nasty, child-hating headmistress, Miss Trunbull. My America series My Name is America series The Nancy Drew stories, Carolyn Keene - Various books about the adventures of Nancy. The mysteries and adventures that she encounters are solved by Nancy 's cleverness. Old Yeller, Fred Gipson - The close relationship of a boy and his dog set in Texas in the late 1860's. Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, Judy Blume - Ten-year-old Sheila spends the summer in Tarrytown, New York and learns to face her fears. Pinballs, Betsy Byars- Three lonely foster children learn to care about themselves and each other. Ralph S. Mouse, Beverly Cleary - Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, goes to school and investigates rodents and becomes a peacemaker for two lonely boys. The Ramona Quinby stories, Beverly Cleary - Multiples books of the adventures of a young girl and her escapades from kindergarten to fourth grade. The Redwall series, Brian Jacques - The stories of another land were little creatures rule. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor - An African American family living in Mississippi during the 1930's facing prejudice and discrimination. The Royal Diaries series Runaway Ralph, Beverly Clearly - Ralph runs away looking for freedom but winds up even worse as a prisoner at a summer camp. Sarah, Plain and Tall, Patricia MacLachlan - Caleb and Anna's father invites a mail-order bride to live with them in their prairie home. Sequals include Skylark and Caleb's Story. Series of Unfortunate Events (Books 1-13), Lemony Snicket - The adventures of the 3 orphaned Baudelaire children and the serious misfortunes that they encounter. Shiloh, Phyllis Naylor - Marty finds a lost beagle that is owned by a mean man who mistreats his dogs. Sounder, William Armstrong - The son of a sharecropper grows in courage and understanding with the help of his dog, Sounder. Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself, Judy Blume - Ten-year-old Sally casts herself in starring roles in stories that she's' made up while in Miami with her family during the winter of 1947-1948. During the process she encounters a sinister stranger. Stewart Little, E.B. White - A tiny mouse is adopted by a human family and he tries to win over his resentful new brother while fighting off a gang of cats. SuperFudge, Judy Blume - Fudge, the brother of Peter, brings a lot of highs and lows to his life. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Judy Blume - Fudge, the younger brother of Peter, becomes even more demanding and more of a problem to him. The BFG, Roald Dahl - A BFG (Big Friendly Giant) who blows happy dreams to kids, kidsnatches Sophie from her orphanage and they develop a plan to save the world from nine other man-gobbling cannybull giants. The Bridge to Terabithia, Katherine Pattersen - A ten-year-old boy befriends another boy who is a newcomer who eventually meets an untimely death as he tries to reach their hideaway, Terabithia, during a storm. The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien - The story of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, whose life was forever changed when he was granted a wish by a wandering wizard, Gandolf. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis - Four siblings find their way through the back of a wardrobe into the magic land of Narnia and assist its ruler to triumph over the White Witch, who has cursed the land with eternal winter. The Little House on the Prairie series, Laura Ingalls Wilder - The experiences of the Ingalls Family who traveled from the forested area of Wisconsin to a new home on the prairie. The Little Princess, Frances H. Burnett - The wealthy Sarah Crew is placed in a prominent boarding school by her beloved father. The Twits, Roald Dahl - The outwitting by a family of monkeys of two awful old people who like to play nasty tricks. The Watsons go to Birmingham, Christopher Curtis - An African American family from Flint Michigan travels to visit their grandma in Alabama in the summer of 1963. Their life is drastically changed as a result. The Whipping Boy, Sid Fleischman - A bratty prince and his whipping boy mistakenly trade places after becoming involved with dangerous outlaws. The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Elizabeth Speare - Kit Tyler, who lived in Connecticut in 1687, finds herself in trouble and standing trial for witchcraft after befriending an old woman considered a witch in the community. The Witches, Roald Dahl - A young boy and his Norwegian Grandmother, prevent a witches plot to destroy the world's children by turning them all into mice. Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll - A sequel to " Alice in Wonderland." Alice goes through a mirror and discovers a strange adventure. Treasure Island , Robert L. Stevenson - An innkeeper and her son find a treasurer map among the belongings of one of their guests. Walk Two Moons, Sharon Creech - Thirteen-year-old Sal, travels out West with her grandparents to "find" her mom who left suddenly.
